Story behind the song
A young miner is called up to fight in world war 1 in 1915, just before he leaves he goes dancing with a young girl introduced by a friend...
Lyrics
Sarah the maid Edward was just an old friend of the family come to go dancing and take the night air and he brought a friend, a girl they called Sarah A maid from the big house with bonny black hair. And so we all danced, all night in the ballroom, drinking and laughing with hardly a care and she held my hand, though just for a moment Sarah the maid with the bonny black hair. And early next day we walked as the sun rose we talked about life and the things that we share but my heart was pounding just being close to her Sarah the maid with the bonny black hair. And suddenly here we all are at the station Bumping and jostling, just like at the fair with thousands of other men dressed just like I am and Sarah the maid with the bonny black hair. From miner to soldier like most of the friends I knew From Durham to Flanders we'd all soon be there But my mind is filled with dancing and yesterday and Sarah the maid with the bonny black hair. They said a few months and it would be over We'll stop the Hun, let them come if they dare Then I can go home, to be with my family And Sarah the maid with the bonny black hair. And I never knew if Sarah would miss me or when I got home, if she would be there or if she would write to me when I am far away My Sarah, the maid with the bonny black hair. (music) And sometimes the shelling stops just for a moment a few precious seconds of peace fills the air so I take the chance, to dream about home again, and Sarah the maid with the bonny black hair.

Difficult to hear because it sounds like you're at the back end of a cave. But, if we're overlooking production issues, as we often must. Then it becomes a very nice and thought provoking ballad.

What a lovely, touching song all round.... It's good enough in my opinion to stand up there with the best of classic folk songs. Carol.x
