(Carpenters cover) Another song from my ultimate idol. Also experimenting a little with reverb and double-tracking.

Queen of the Cover Songs...
This is something I'm doing just for fun -- to live out a lifelong dream since the age of around 7 or so when I realized that I could carry a tune (without the use of a bucket!) and it didn't sound bad. Much love and thanks go to those in my SoundClick family (and now beyond!) who helped to encourage/challenge me to spread my wings to try this out and continue to take it to the next level. Without your kind support I'd still be just a listener (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Story behind the song
I've been singing this song for as long as I can remember. I've always been able to identify with Karen's voice -- she actually made it cool to be an alto (not to mention a female drummer in the early 70's)!
Lyrics
SUPERSTAR ========= Long ago And oh so far away I fell in love with you Before the second show Your guitar It sounds so sweet and clear But you're not really there It's just the radio Don't you remember you told me you love me baby You said you'd be coming back this way again baby Baby baby baby baby oh baby I love you, I really do Loneliness, is such a sad affair And I can hardly wait To be with you again What to say To make you come again Come back to me again And play your sad guitar Don't you remember you told me you love me baby You said you'd be coming back this way again baby Baby baby baby baby oh baby I love you, I really do

Love that double-tracked sound - it's quite tricky to sing it twice through in time and in tune, so it gives that real flanging effect you can never get using electronics - but you nailed it here! And the backing vox are spot on too! Excellent!

Remember this song well, it was a little eerie when your vocal came in, it sounded so like Karen Carpenter and the double-tracking just adds to the effect. Nicely done, I bet you really enjoyed doing this. It's also very smoothly produced.

This is a great song and you really sing it well. You sound like you are enjoying singing it too (which is important; as It comes across to the listener). It's probably slightly 'un-cool' for a guy to admit liking The Carpenters ! but hey, I do . . .and Abba :) Well done Mary.
Hi Mary, thanks for the invite and sorry it took me so long. This is one of my favourite songs great choice and you do a great job Keep us posted Julie

One of my favorites. Karen Carpenter was one I truly admired back then. I like your voice, Mary. Always remember to be YOU and your own voice. It's good to have a favorite artist, song, etc. but always implement your style and your touch when singing. Reverb enhances your voice as long as it is not too much. Great job! :)
Great cover of a classic and your voice is wonderful !

Very nice! I didn't know the song or Karen C. before, but your clear, distinct vocals have true passion and its clear that the song suits you very well. To have a good sense of what style one can perform reallly well is key to a good result of course, so well done there! I saw some remarks on the production from our other friends here that I agree with, so no more to say about that.

It's a lovely song and it's made for you! You already have elements of Karen Carpenter in your voice, the doubling effect enhances this even more because there was often subtle "doubling" on the Carpenter's songs. You'll learn a lot from experimenting with your effects and software, learning about mic & vocal techniques - it's all a matter of fiddling around and gaining experience. You have come a long way in a very short time and this recording made me so proud of you.

I've backed up many singers that have done versions of this song, but yours is one of the best versions that I've heard!!! :) Nice one!!!

A fine choice! Great song, Sonic Youth covered this one in the 90s, it's been a real fav ever since. Nice vocal performance, you're sounding more relaxed, and it appears you've procured some effects software, so fun, keep it going, way to go!
