Martin Gustav Collective
Growing up in Austria, I founded my first band in 1994 playing bass, which has remained my main instrument ever since. From early on, I was the kind of musician who composed the music around existing lyrics. Over the years, a lot has changed: from my very first recordings on cassette tapes, to the first steps with Cool Edit Pro, and eventually moving on to Logic each stage shaped my sound and approach. With the internet, it became easier to connect with lyricists and musicians from all over the world and turn ideas into full productions. I was never the strongest lyricist myself, but I developed my own style as a songwriter and composer. The Martin Gustav Project is where I present these collaborations a collection of songs shaped by friendship, creativity, and the joy of making music together.

Story behind the song
Back when I was active in the rock, pop, and folk scene, there was a long discussion on the songwriter101 forum about whether every musician could cross into any genre. Half-joking, I said: I could write a country song right now. So I tried. The result was a song full of clichés: a man from the countryside falls in love with a woman from the city, who eventually leaves him because she cant give up her urban life. The lyrics were messy, but the heart was there. My friend W. Ray Bertram helped rework the text, Robert Baitinger contributed to the production, and Cathy Wilson adjusted some lines and sang the vocals on the very first demo. What you hear now is a reimagined version more polished, but still rooted in that playful challenge from years ago.
Lyrics
We kissed goodbye at the station His train will soon be leaving I watch as he gets on board While my heart is slowly breaking He looks at me as I start crying We both know what we have is dying The train begins to move, starts to roll away How I wish he could hear me say [Chorus] Come back home to the country Come back home, please stay with me I'm already on my knees Yes, I need you here with me I want to tell you, I need to let you know Please come back, please come back home [Verse 2] We walk hand in hand down country roads In the quiet country air And watch the sun set and rise Shee was always near, and she always cared She fell in love and left the city Made a home, a life out here with me I had her heart, but the city kept her soul And in the end, she just had to go [Chorus] Come back home to the country Come back home, please stay with me I'm already on my knees Yes, I need you here with me I want to tell you, I need to let you know Please come back, please come back home [#bridge] And as I hear the lonely whistle blow I wish again, somehow I could let you know Come back home to the country Come back home, please stay with me I'm already on my knees Yes, I need you here with me I want to tell you, I need to let you know Please come back, please come back home
