You dont want to be a nobody
a body no one wants to know
they litter the streets everywhere
they have no place to go
some survive in cardboard boxes
sharing corrugated grief
making dinners out of dumpsters
when hunger begs them for relief
You will find them haunting barrooms
toasting their sorrow in the gloom
seeking temporal anesthesia
and a barflys sweet perfume
Squatting in abandoned buildings
clutching needles that need filling
heating spoons they fill with poison
addiction leaves no other options
standing on a rooftops edge
trying to find some courage dredged
Like Gargoyles or deaths disciples
Their autopsies marked suicidal.
Popularity demands
so much more then some can give
when they fail to meet its standards
society seldom forgives.
We are all one step away
from winding up as no one
Lose your job till bills pile high
then eviction papers come
They might offer unemployment
meager checks that dont come close
to the style of living you are used too
as you join the poorer folks
some just turn to lives of crime
desperation leaves no room
when your family needs feeding
busted you face prisons gloom.
Its the way the world has been
ever since mankind began
the wealthy thrive, the needy suffer
from haves, have nots and also rans
You dont want to be a nobody
a body no one wants to know
Keep a tight reign on your lifestyle
it can vanish quick, you know
I have lived for weeks inside
my car that wouldnt run at all
shivering on a vinyl backseat
when poverty it came to call
I was lucky I found labor
worked my fingers to the bone
seven days twelve hour shifts
till I could afford a home.
Being a nobody comes with
choices that you have to make
just get high and live in squalor
or find a harder road to take.
There are not that many options
when youve hit the bottom rung
It requires starting over
fight back hard or youll be done.
being nobody is not fun.
and if you pass one on the street
with a tin cup in their hand
dont stroll by ignoring them
someday you might be that man
we should all give what we can
