Story behind the song
This is a traditional lullaby often attributed to American slaves, although some scholars think it may have older roots. To create this rendition I took the separate versions that ultimately happen in folk music and pieced them together, added a couple of verses, and translated some words to Mohegan. This is my original derivative version. Practicing it on autoharp and singing with an acute case of bronchitis. This was a lot harder than I expected. Ha. At this time I am not offering licensing of the song to other folks. Not yet. So all rights reserved.
Lyrics
"All the Pretty Little Horses" Based on the traditional American folksong REFRAIN Hushaby, Don't you cry, Mawi Kawi, nupiwi. 1. When you wake, You shall have cake And All the pretty little horses Blacks and bays, Dapples and grays, Coach and six-a little horses. Buckskins and roans, Mustangs, pintos All the pretty little horses (hums) All the pretty little horses (REFRAIN) Hushaby Don't you cry Go to sleep, nupáhpohs 2. Way down yonder, In the meadow There's a poor little lambie, Buzzards and flies Peck out its eyes, Poor little thing crying, "Mommy!" Bees and butterflies Dance on its eyes Poor little thing crying Mommy Hushaby, Don't you cry, Mawi Kawi, nupiwi. 3. When you wake, You shall have cake And All the pretty little horses Blacks and bays, Dapples and grays, Coach and six-a little horses. Buckskins and roans, Mustangs, pintos All the pretty little horses (hums) All the pretty little horses
